All Voting is Local Action advocates for state and local policies and legislative priorities that expand voter access. We fight policies that attempt to silence voters, and we hold accountable those who use their power to deny the will of the people by suppressing the vote and undermining trust in our elections and their results.

Our theory of change recognizes that the business of running elections is year-round work, and so too is the work to build bridges with election officials who want to expand access to the ballot – and hold accountable those who don’t. Our guiding principles help us in achieving these goals:

  • High stakes, high impact. As anti-voter advocates across the country double down on policies and laws that make it harder to register, vote, and count votes, AVL Action is strategically investing our efforts in advocating for and against bills and local policies that most impact the communities we serve.
  • Long-term power-building is core to protecting the freedom to vote. We build partnerships within the communities we serve to ensure they are equipped with the necessary resources, infrastructure, and support to effectively engage with legislation and policies that most affect their ability to cast a vote that counts.
  • The threat of authoritarianism is real and present. Election deniers are authoritarian opponents of democracy, attempting to exploit our elections from the inside for their own gain through election infiltration, subversion, and sabotage. We believe that ending election sabotage is not only achievable but absolutely critical to resisting authoritarianism and fulfilling the promise of our democracy.
  • Accountability is essential to stopping anti-voter, extremist officials in their tracks. AVL Action pushes back on extremist public officials – including candidates – who use their power and platform to deploy voter suppression, spread disinformation, and sabotage elections.

Check out some of our wins from 2023 below.

Arizona

AVL Action Arizona led efforts in rural Mohave County to defeat a resolution that would have authorized a full hand count of elections in the county. With overwhelming evidence that this conspiracy theorist-led tactic is more error-prone and more expensive than machine tabulation – while also delaying delivery of election results – defeating this resolution was crucial to protecting elections in Mohave and across the state.

Florida

In Brevard County, AVL Action Florida led a rapid-response campaign with state and local partners to fight against county commission-proposed cuts to election administration funding in the lead-up to the 2024 election. These cuts would have robbed Floridians of key resources during voting, blocking their ability to vote by mail and potentially causing long lines at the polls on Election Day. AVL Action Florida’s community-focused activation set an important precedent, sending a clear message to officials across the state that voters and advocates will not stand for budget cuts that block their right to vote.

Georgia

AVL Action Georgia played a pivotal role in preventing the appointment of one of the state’s most prolific vote challengers to the election board of Fulton County – the state’s most populous county and home to Atlanta. Our team repeatedly testified against his nomination, often being the only voice in the room speaking in opposition, and sent memos outlining his history of unfounded voter challenges to the board of commissioners.

Michigan

AVL Action Michigan did vital work in supporting increased funding for election administration – helping to secure $45 million for implementation of pro-voter reforms, including nine days of early voting, additional drop boxes, and postage for absentee ballots. We convened state and local partners to develop a shared advocacy strategy, called on state officials to provide urgent funding, and subgranted to partners to enable them to mobilize their constituencies to contact legislators.

Nevada

During the 2023 legislative session, AVL Action Nevada and partners advocated for – and were successful in – getting Governor Lombardo to sign SB 216 and SB 327 into law. The laws mandate communication between Tribal Nations and elections officials in Nevada and guarantee every Tribal Nation a reservation-based polling place, both of which ease barriers Native voters face.

Ohio

In August 2023, AVL Action Ohio participated in the One Person, One Vote campaign to help ensure Issue 1’s defeat at the ballot box during the special election, supporting the campaign through voter education and advocacy alongside state coalition partners. The anti-democratic resolution sought to increase the threshold for a ballot initiative to 60% from the existing 50% +1, and defeating it protected majority rule in the state.

Pennsylvania

AVL Action Pennsylvania worked with the newly elected county commissioner in Allegheny County (home of Pittsburgh) to implement AVL Action Pennsylvania’s pro-voter agenda and the addition of five new drop boxes for the 2024 election cycle. This will be the first time Allegheny County has provided drop boxes to voters since the 2020 primary election.

Wisconsin

In 2023, AVL Action Wisconsin prevented a popular voting location in midtown Milwaukee from being relocated to a less accessible and more secluded area, instead aiding in finding a more suitable location. The city is home to more than 560,000 people, nearly 40% of whom are Black and have long faced barriers to the ballot.
