About the Role: 

All Voting is Local (AVL) seeks a Chief Operations Officer (COO) to support the organization in its efforts to defend and expand access to the ballot by identifying and fighting voter suppression at the local level. The COO will lead and oversee the operations of the organization including its financial health, human resources, and legal compliance. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), this role will navigate complex rules governing nonprofit organizations, support internal teams and be a key leader in listening to and communicating with a diverse staff. The COO will work in collaboration with external legal counsel, the Managing Directors (Development, Data, Campaigns and Communications), and will oversee the Finance Director and the Senior Operations Manager. 

 

What You Will Do: 

Leadership 

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, support in the execution of AVL’s strategic plan and implement processes, systems, and approaches to achieve it. 
  • Lead discussions and represent AVL with external partners, consultants, and vendors.
  • Communicate and present critical operational matters to the ED, Board of Directors and appropriate teams and staff. 

People Management 

  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and compensation of the organization’s staff.
  • Identify and support staff with the resources needed to successfully execute AVL’s mission. 
  • Create systems and tools for staff to build and foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive workplace. 
  • Establish practices and systems that promote opportunity and professional growth at every level of the organization and evaluate team performance in an effort to identify opportunities that make AVL’s team and work more impactful. 

Operations Oversight 

  • Manage the organization’s day-to-day operations, including organization-wide budgeting.
  • Design, improve, and/or implement systems, processes, and structures related to operations, human resources, and finance.
  • Ensure the organization remains compliant with all human resources regulations, tax filings, and audits. 
  • Oversee the Finance Director in the management of payroll, expenses, budgeting, and tax compliance. 
  • Oversee the Senior Operations Manager in the management of contracts, vendors, and support of staff needs. 

 

What You Will Bring: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, public administration, or related field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience, preferably in managing or overseeing operations; prior work in the nonprofit sector is preferred. 
  • 5+ years leading and managing teams; experience working with a remote and distributed team. Experience navigating nonprofit law and an understanding of organizational compliance, and legal and tax filings. Demonstrated financial management skills; demonstrated success in business or program operations and experience implementing systems and structures designed to increase efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Experience developing and leading annual budgeting processes with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to make tough strategic and operational decisions when confronted with difficult choices and in highly complex situations and fast-moving environments. 
  • A high level of cultural competence and a commitment to building an environment that respects, values, and promotes justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Experience developing an environment of collaboration, transparency, and respect by strengthening working relationships between functional areas as well as team members and helping to identify and resolve work conflicts. 
  • Works with and models the highest level of integrity and ethics. 
  • Interest in, or commitment to the mission of the organization. 
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal competencies. 
  • Knowledge of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) operational requirements is strongly preferred.
  • Preferred experience managing teams, vendors, and consultants. 
  • Preferred experience with technical tools including QuickBooks, Google Docs/Sheets.

Location – This position is currently remote. Staff residing in the DC area may be asked to return to an office at a later date, in accordance with health policies as determined by AVL. 

 

Salary Range – $148,235 – 173,490
