About the Role:

AVL seeks a Senior Manager of Development Operations to build, project manage, and support its development and fundraising program. As of June 2022, AVL is a newly independent organization –  as a result, this newly created position will be integral to the necessary infrastructure at AVL for a strong development program. Reporting to the Senior Advisor for Stakeholder Engagement, the Senior Manager of Development Operations will partner and collaborate closely with a cross-section of team members to nimbly coordinate and implement key development and fundraising initiatives, processes, systems, and communication materials.

What You Will Do:

  • Partner with the Senior Advisor for Stakeholder Engagement and other members of the national leadership team to provide operational thought partnership and solutions on key development and fundraising initiatives; anticipate short- and long-term opportunities and challenges and provide appropriate internal operational solutions to support, drive, and manage to a successful outcome.
  • Design, build, and implement internal development and fundraising systems, structures, processes for AVL to manage relationships with donors and foundations (inclusive of a CRM for donor engagement and management).
  • Research and identify potential vendors (e.g. software, systems) to support the execution and project management of development and fundraising activities.
  • Develop and execute a schedule of regular donor/fundraising outreach communications.
  • Understand, develop, and deliver on donor-facing communications, proposals, and reporting processes; interfacing with necessary stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive final product.
  • Provide team leaders with research, memos, documents, and meeting preparation for a variety of conferences and meeting engagements that have a development and fundraising component.
  • Consistently look across the organization to seek opportunities that will enhance AVL’s ability to strengthen its development and fundraising efforts (e.g. applying trusted approaches and/or systems that have not been applied to development and fundraising)

What You Will Bring:

Minimum Requirements:

  • 6+ years of total experience with 3+ years of direct and hands-on experience in developing, implementing, maintaining, and iterating new systems, processes, and practices.
  • Entrepreneurial Energy + Agility: Experience working in a startup like environment; demonstrated experience building and implementing newness; an ability to positively identify, influence, and collaborate with internal and external individuals and teams to initiate and drive results; an ability to easily transition from one task to another while maintaining consistent momentum and follow through; is self-directed.
  • Data Orientation: An ability to develop key performance indicators to measure, track, and strengthen areas of opportunity in AVL development and fundraising efforts; is able to translate data into a narrative to troubleshoot challenges and/or to provide innovative solutions.
  • Project Management: An ability to organize the development work and project manage fundraising work across the AVL team. This includes executing on development deliverables and setting agendas for and running development-related meetings with internal and external stakeholders, all in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Experience composing written communication and coordination and leading discussions with internal teams and key external stakeholders; is a keen listener and collaborator and thrives on aggregating feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders to develop best in class development approaches for AVL.
  • Philanthropy/Fundraising: Knowledge of the philanthropic environment (either as a funder or a grantee) or a keen interest in learning and developing relationships; experience working with donor management tools and an interest in supporting AVL in incorporating these systems. 
  • Growth Mindset: Curious; consistently seeks to iterate current methods through team learning and collaboration; delights in taking initiative to anticipate potential opportunities and/or challenges and posing viable solutions, seeks help, resources, and asks questions as part of the iterative process.

Preferred Experiences (not required):

  • Experience in synthesizing disparate frontline development and fundraising activities and opportunities to develop innovative strategies and systems.
  • Hands-on experience with or has solid understanding of development strategy as it pertains to high net worth individuals, foundations, and other sources of fundraising.

Location – This position is currently remote. Staff residing in the DC area may be asked to return to an office at a later date, in accordance with health policies as determined by AVL.

Annual Salary Range –  $89,000 to $109,000
