Michiganders increased access to voting by passing Proposal 3 during the 2018 election. The change to election law created same-day voter registration and absentee voting without reason.
But in the age of coronavirus, misinformation and voter suppression, local civic organizations want to ensure Michigan voters’ voices are heard.
All Voting is Local, a national nonprofit that works to remove discriminatory barriers to democracy, hosted a tele-town hall on Monday evening to discuss voting. Panelists included Aghogho Edevbie from All Voting is Local Michigan, Betsy Cushman from League of Women Voters of Michigan, Branden Snyder from Detroit Action, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib who serves Michigan’s 13th congressional district. Olivia Lewis from BridgeDetroit served as moderator.
The panel discussed the many measures Michigan’s Secretary of State has implemented to assist Michiganders in casting their vote, including voting by mail or absentee voting, how to become a poll worker, and how to gain access to the polls.
