COLUMBUS–Mike Brickner, Ohio State Director of All Voting is Local, issued the following statement on Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s results of last-chance mailing to voters whose registrations will be purged. The mailing led to only 540 voters confirming or updating their registration out of 264,516 letters sent:
“Ohio’s voter registration system desperately needs to be updated to better serve voters and election officials. Massive voter purges pose a distinct threat to our democracy, and have been shown to disproportionately impact voters of color, low-income voters, and those who move frequently. Nearly half of states have adopted reforms that allow voters to register and update their registration automatically, or register to vote on the same day they cast their ballot. Ohio must join the growing number of states that have modernized voter registration, making elections more accessible to voters and saving elections officials resources.”
