ATLANTA — All Voting is Local Georgia, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., and nearly 20 nonpartisan voting rights organizations urged Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to enact three strategies for expanding access to ballot return ballot drop boxes, which will provide safe and accessible voting for all Georgians in the general election.
In their letter, the advocates urged the Secretary of State to implement “commonsense and nonpartisan recommendations so that Georgia voters can safely and successfully cast their ballots in the upcoming November general election.” Advocates have asked the Secretary of State to reply by September 30, 2020.
The three recommendations the groups are calling for are:
- Mandate all 159 Georgia counties provide at least one ballot drop box for every 15,000 to 20,000 voters, as recommended by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
- Remove barriers and help counties access federal coronavirus relief funding (CARES Act) for ballot drop boxes and provide additional financial support where federal funding is insufficient.
- Promote ballot drop boxes and develop a statewide website listing all ballot drop box locations.
