The groups and Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski emphasized the need to protect democracy from fake electors

December 13, 2023

MILWAUKEE – At a press conference today, All Voting is Local Action and Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, alongside other advocates and voting rights groups, called on fake elector and Commissioner Robert “Bob” Spindell to resign from his position on the Wisconsin Elections Commission and for Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu to rescind his appointment of Spindell, effective immediately.

“Having Bob Spindell, an admitted fake elector and a person who spoke so disparagingly about the freedom to vote, currently serving as an Election Commissioner has an impact not just on Wisconsin, but on the rest of the nation as we approach the 2024 elections,” said Hannah Fried, All Voting is Local Action Executive Director. “If we do not hold accountable these fake electors – specifically those who continue to have power over our elections – what is to stop them from once again trying to take away our freedom and destabilize our democracy?”

“We must remind ourselves that our officials are trusted stewards and protectors of our democracy, and when they undermine the sanctity of our elections, they should be held accountable for their actions,” said Sam Liebert, All Voting is Local Action Wisconsin State Director. “Commissioner Spindell should have sought to deliver the promise of American democracy to every single person in this state, regardless of party affiliation. In addition to calling for his resignation, we call for a replacement who will place free and fair elections above partisanship and reflect the diversity of Wisconsin, particularly our historically disenfranchised communities.”

Background:
In December of 2020, in an effort to subvert the 2020 Presidential Election and despite the Wisconsin Supreme Court upholding President Biden’s victory in Wisconsin, a group of 10 officials filled out paperwork ensuring former President Trump’s victory and submitted it to Congress, the National Archives, a federal judge, and Wisconsin’s Secretary of State’s office. This group included Commissioner Robert “Bob” Spindell, who serves on the Wisconsin Elections Commission, and all ten individuals recently settled a civil lawsuit while admitting their actions were part of an effort to overturn the results of the presidential election.

All 10 also acknowledged President Biden’s win, withdrew their false slate filings that reported Trump had won Wisconsin, and agreed not to serve as presidential electors in 2024 or any other presidential election where Trump is on the ballot. In the settlement, the fake electors agreed to assist the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing investigation into the attempts to subvert the 2020 election results. Notably, this settlement is the first instance of Trump electors retracting their filings in any of the seven battleground states.
