Lansing, Michigan – Today, the Michigan State Senate passed the Michigan Voting Rights Act, moving forward a pivotal piece of legislation aimed at further enshrining voter protections in state law as much of the country moves to do the opposite. In response, All Voting is Local Action Michigan State Director Ashiya Brown issued the following statement:
“As legislatures across the country push to keep eligible voters from voting with unnecessarily restrictive voting laws and redistricting aimed at erasing representation for Black voters in the South, we are immensely proud to live in a state whose legislature is standing up for voters and doubling down on pro-voter policies like the Voting Rights Act.
“Michigan has a long history of protecting and expanding access to the ballot to ensure that our democratic process is reflective of the diverse citizens of our state, and we believe the passage of the Michigan VRA is a deeply necessary continuation of that legacy. We encourage the Michigan House of Representatives to pass this vitally important legislation to protect Michigan voters and solidify this historic win for all of us.”
