MADISON, Wis. – In response to the Wisconsin State House passage of an amendment that would enshrine Wisconsin’s voter identification requirement into the state constitution, All Voting is Local Action Wisconsin State Director Sam Liebert issued the following statement:

“This amendment is a solution in search of a problem. Wisconsin already has one of the strictest voter ID laws in the nation. Wrapped in this guise of protecting our democracy, this measure is a blatant attempt to make it even harder for Wisconsinites to exercise their right to vote. Adding this unnecessary constitutional amendment will not enhance election security, which experts and election officials consistently affirm is already strong.

“It remains that the real threat to our democracy is extremists who are willing to ignore the voices of voters and throw obstacles in the way of Black and Brown voters and other marginalized groups, all in an attempt to cling to power. Unfortunately, today’s vote is just the latest in our state’s recent history of extremists using all the tools at their disposal to subvert election results.

“We know that our democracy is only as strong as the number of people allowed to express themselves through their ballot. This is why we urge all Wisconsinites to reject this proposal on the ballot on April 1. AVL Action Wisconsin remains committed to educating voters on their rights and taking action to ensure that the hands of time are not turned back on our state. The future we all deserve depends on it.”
