Detroit, MI – Today, District Court Judge Kristen Simmons decided that the charges brought against 15 fake electors in Michigan from the 2020 election are dismissed. In Response, All Voting is Local Action Michigan State Director Ashiya Brown issued the following statement:
“Today’s ruling, which dismissed the charges, is yet another blow to the guardrails of our democracy. The 2020 plot to overturn the presidential election results and the subsequent insurrection at the Capitol were just the first glimpses of the lengths President Trump and his political allies will go to undermine American democracy and the will of the people for their own gain. Without consequences for breaking federal law, we only guarantee that these attacks will continue, and the safeguards of our elections will continue to be eroded. To dismiss these charges ahead of the 2026 elections, which we know are at risk of election sabotage, is disgraceful, as it serves as a green light to those who may again attempt to take the will of the people away. Unfortunately for them, however, we now know their blueprint and will be watching and ready to fight back against any future attempts at election sabotage.”
Background
This development comes two years after the initial charges were brought against a group of 16 people who are accused of falsely filling out paperwork to overturn the 2020 election results in favor of then-candidate Donald Trump. Michigan is one of seven states where Republican activists convened in 2020 to attempt to overturn election results to favor their candidate using “fake electors.”
