PHOENIX – Today, All Voting is Local Action, along with several pro-democracy organizations in Arizona, sent a letter to Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to request a veto of Senate Bill 1001. The letter underscored the legislation’s harm if signed into law, as it would shorten the window for ballot returns by three days and would disproportionately disenfranchise rural communities and Native voters living on tribal lands.

“SB 1001 would disproportionately impact rural and Native voters living on rural Tribal lands and creates more unnecessary restrictions for early ballot voters,” the groups wrote in their letter to Gov. Hobbs to veto the bill. “Due to the remote nature of these communities, mail in these areas takes significantly longer to be received by the voter, and takes just as long to be received by the county recorder by the deadline.”

The letter went on to describe the harm of removing all voting locations designated as ballot drop-offs and instead designating “certain voting locations” with no minimum guidelines, leaving questions as to whether all communities would be adequately served under these new guidelines. The groups concluded their letter by highlighting recent polling that showed the vast majority of Arizona voters want the deadline to remain unchanged and asked that the governor keep these considerations in mind and veto the legislation.
