MILWAUKEE – Today, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers immediately vetoed Assembly Bill 87, which would have required voters with a felony conviction to pay restitution fines and fees to have their right to vote restored. In response, All Voting is Local Action Wisconsin State Director Sam Liebert released the following statement:
“Governor Evers stood up for democracy today by using his veto power to protect Wisconsin voters with felony convictions from a discriminatory poll tax. Our country and our state are at their best when we have systems in place that allow returning citizens to properly rehabilitate and become civically engaged, whether for the first time or once again. Being able to vote without paying a restitution fee is essential to maintaining a healthy democracy.
“By passing Assembly Bill 87, it’s clear that many in the Wisconsin Legislature are still taking part in a concerted effort to target and suppress justice-impacted voters. Gov. Evers’ veto defends the voices of Wisconsinites at a critical moment when the rights of historically marginalized groups are under attack in the Badger State and beyond.”
