WYOMING, MI – Today, August 7, 2023, the Wyoming City Council called for Mayor Kent Vanderwood’s resignation following his inclusion in Attorney General Nessel’s announcement of an indictment against 16 individuals for their alleged participation in the 2020 fake elector scheme. Mayor Vanderwood faces eight felony charges. Michigan Democracy Coalition supports the Wyoming City Council’s call for Mayor Vanderwood to resign as Mayor in a joint letter:

On July 18th, the Michigan Attorney General’s office announced charges against Mayor Vanderwood and 15 other individuals for their alleged role in the fake electors scheme following the 2020 presidential election. Mayor Vanderwood, along with the others, allegedly signed documents approving electoral votes for former President Trump despite having no authority to serve as qualified electors. Mayor Vanderwood is currently charged with eight felonies, including conspiracy to commit forgery and election law forgery, among other serious crimes. The allegations raise serious concerns about Mayor Vanderwood’s ability to fulfill his duties in a manner that upholds the values and principles an elected official should abide by.

Mayor Vanderwood should resign in accordance with the Wyoming City Council’s request, ultimately restoring integrity to the Office of the Mayor. We applaud the Wyoming City Council members for taking swift and courageous action and recognize Wyoming residents who have offered their support.
