Smith, professor of political science, University of Florida, will host a telephone press briefing on Tuesday, March, at 10 a.m. ET, to discuss findings from their latest report titled “Casting, Rejecting, and Curing Vote-by-Mail Ballots in Florida’s 2020 General Election.” On the call, they will urge Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature to adopt uniform, pro-voter policies to ensure that all eligible voters can cast and cure a valid mail ballot.

Background:
In Florida’s November 3, 2020 general election, vote-by-mail ballots accounted for more than 4.85 million of the state’s 11.1 million total votes cast. However, voters of color, younger voters, and newly registered voters were disproportionately more likely to have their mail ballots initially flagged for rejection by county supervisors of elections, creating additional hurdles counting their ballots. Most notably, there was considerable variation in the cure rates of VBM ballots cast across the state’s 67 counties, particularly across age groups and racial and ethnic groups.
