Washington, D.C. — Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which upholds North Carolina’s ruling that congressional districts violated state laws is a win for American democracy. This decision and the impact of the ruling sets important precedent for the rest of the country ahead of next year’s general elections by confirming the vital role that state courts play in safeguarding the rights of voters and our elections.

“The Supreme Court had the opportunity to reject the independent state legislature theory (ISLT) and affirm the system of checks and balances in this country, and they did. There has been an increasing threat to our democracy that includes the partisan gerrymandering of congressional maps, efforts to thwart election certification, and the removal of nonpartisan election officials across the country, several of which have invoked a flawed and biased ISLT. Today’s ruling  sends a message to those who continue to violate the rights of voters and consolidate power among a select few. All Voting is Local is glad the Supreme Court made the right ruling and we will continue to identify these threats and fight for American democracy.” – Hannah Fried, Executive Director, All Voting is Local
