WASHINGTON, D.C. — All Voting is Local’s Executive Director, Hannah Fried issued the following statement in response to the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump and his efforts to subvert the will of the voters in 2020 and remain in power.

“Nobody is above the law, not even former presidents. Today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice to indict former President Donald Trump is evidence that anyone who attempts to endanger our democracy by obstructing the peaceful transfer of power and sabotaging our nation’s free and fair elections by spreading known lies and attempting to silence the voices of voters can be held legally accountable for their actions. Today proves that there are checks and balances in place to defend our election processes from those who wish to corrupt our democracy. But, the threat of these actions is not over.

Trump and his allies’ incendiary and unfounded rhetoric on ‘stolen elections’ cast doubt on our election system. And despite mounting evidence to the contrary and numerous reports before and after January 6th that Trump lost the 2020 election fairly, Trump has continued to make baseless public and online claims about our elections and that the legal actions taken against him are politically motivated. Today’s decision to indict the former president signals this country’s commitment to protecting our freedoms, affirming that there are consequences for those who have spread disinformation and threatened the bedrock of our democracy.”
