WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act — an unnecessary and burdensome piece of anti-voter legislation that will disenfranchise millions of voters and silence the voices of Americans from all walks of life. All Voting is Local Executive Director Hannah Fried responded with the following statement:
“Millions of Americans lack access to the birth certificate or passport that the SAVE Act would require them to show to be able to register to vote or update their registration information. More than 140 million American citizens do not have a passport, and people of color are more likely not to have access to the type of documentation the SAVE Act will require them to show to exercise their freedom to vote. The SAVE Act is not about protecting elections. From the voters forced to “show their papers” to the election workers who will face criminal penalties for minor mistakes registering voters, the SAVE Act directly attacks the power of everyday people to shape their communities and their futures. It’s time to reject this harmful measure and protect every American’s fundamental right to vote.”
