WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to an executive order signed by President Donald J. Trump aimed to vastly reshape how elections are conducted, All Voting is Local released the following statement:
“Today’s executive order is an egregious action against our democracy and all Americans. We are witnessing the weaponization of anti-voter conspiracy theories to justify an executive power grab that, if implemented, will silence voters, making it more difficult for voters to confidently cast their ballots and have their votes counted. It will call into question the citizenship of lawful voters, punish states by withholding or conditioning federal funding that helps elections run smoothly, empower Elon Musk & DOGE to subpoena state voting records, and create unnecessary chaos for state and local election administrators, as well as insurmountable and unnecessary barriers to the ballot for millions of Americans.
“In reality, this executive order undermines the power granted to the states over elections by the Constitution, violates the National Voting Rights Act (NVRA), and subverts the role of the independent, bipartisan U.S. Election Assistance Commission. This is a clear attempt to normalize appalling policies under the guise of ‘election integrity,’ so that voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act will move through Congress. Rather than trying to silence voters and restrict access to the ballot, President Trump should focus on advancing policies that provide state and local election officials the resources they need to continue to effectively and safely administer elections and that allow all Americans to fully participate in our democracy.”
