WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, All Voting is Local Executive Vice President of State Campaigns and Programs Cynthia Travieso released the following statement:
“President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was exactly what we expected: more deceit and distraction to hide the plain truth about attempts to keep Americans from voting and eligible votes from being counted to change the results of the midterm elections and beyond.
“The Trump administration continues to make up lies and see what sticks, and that’s some of what this State of the Union accomplished. Americans are deeply concerned about the cost of living, more extreme political polarization, and this administration doing anything they can to seize more power and control our elections—especially with tactics like SAVE 2.0, which would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters and create profound hardships for local and state election officials who keep our elections running smoothly, count our votes, and certify elections in accordance with the U.S. Constitution and state laws.
“This was not a State of the Union address but the same, tired playbook aimed at claiming more power. What happens in this country is up to us. In America, voters should pick their leaders, with no exceptions. We say ‘Hands off our vote!’”
