Washington, D.C. – All Voting is Local Executive Director Hannah Fried issued the following statement in response to the indictments of former President Donald Trump and his allies by a Georgia grand jury investigating their effort to overturn the 2020 election results:
“Georgia has reminded the country today that former President Trump, Rudy Guiliani, Mark Meadows, and 16 others alleged to have engaged in a criminal conspiracy to overturn election results are not above the law. In charging 19 individuals, ranging from the then-sitting president to a county election administrator, who allegedly engaged in a months-long widespread effort, this indictment reveals a sophisticated conspiracy to undermine our elections and corrupt the people and systems that run them. Monday’s indictments should serve as a wake-up call to anyone still actively endangering our democracy by falsely calling into question verified and accurate results. There are consequences to trying to overturn the will of the people.
“The charges include that the alleged co-conspirators harassed election workers, solicited public officials to violate their oaths, infiltrated voting equipment, and engaged in a cover-up – all to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The indictments prove there are still checks and balances in place to hold wrongdoers accountable and to defend our elections from those who wish to sabotage our democracy.
“But the threat is not over. Across the country, the same lies used to advance this conspiracy are being deployed to sow doubt about our elections and erect barriers to the ballot. As the indictments make clear, the American people won’t be silenced by anyone who uses their power to overturn the will of the voters.”
