Georgia’s State Election Board Undermines Elections by Issuing Subpoena Over 2020 Results

ATLANTA – Today, All Voting is Local and several pro-democracy groups in Georgia released the following statement after the State Election Board voted 3 to 1 to subpoena Fulton County over ballots from the 2020 general election:

“The decision by the three-person anti-voter majority on the Georgia State Election Board to subpoena ballots and ballot envelopes from the 2020 election in Fulton County is yet another example of the board’s willingness to engage in political spectacle despite the limitations placed on it by Georgia law. This likely unlawful investigation into Fulton County comes after five years of disinformation and conspiracy theories targeting the county’s 2020 election results. 

“The brazen, conspiracy-driven actions of the board’s majority further delegitimize its reputation, risk the safety of county officials who have been targeted by threats and harassment, and continue to undermine the foundation of our democracy by sowing doubt in election results they find politically inconvenient. Together with federal overreach seeking to intimidate and undermine local election offices and strong-arm states into submission, this is a deeply alarming and anti-democratic action that harms voters, election workers, and Georgia’s democracy, all while putting our future elections at risk. 

“As advocates for democracy and for the voters of Georgia, we strongly condemn the board’s actions. Georgia’s voters and election workers deserve better than politicized investigations into legitimate election results. Instead of dragging our state backward and relitigating the 2020 election, the board should be working to protect ballot access for every community and provide local election administrators with the resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively.”
