All Voting is Local Wisconsin State Director Sam Liebert issued the following statement in response to the Department of Justice’s lawsuit filed Dec. 18 against Wisconsin for access to the state’s voter rolls:
“As part of its quest to get states to turn over sensitive voter data, which includes Social Security numbers, the Trump administration and the Department of Justice are now suing Wisconsin for refusing to bend to their agenda to gain access to vital information about voters in the Badger State. Unhindered access to voter rolls will allow this administration to spread lies about our elections and potentially undermine future elections if the results don’t go their way. It will be open season for election deniers.
“There has been no clear indication of how this administration will use voters’ personal information, and we cannot take that risk. Our state has consistently maintained the safe and strong administration of our voter rolls, and this situation only puts us in a volatile position. Previously, the Wisconsin Elections Commission, which denied unredacted voter rolls to the federal government, made the right choice in rejecting this gross overreach of power, since voter privacy is at stake. Additionally, they followed the law of this state, as it prohibits fulfilling the DOJ’s request.”
