PHOENIX – In support of free and fair elections, the undersigned released the following joint statement regarding the deadline for voters to cure their ballots:

“We support community groups and candidates of any party fighting for voters’ rights to have adequate time to respond to any questions about the signatures on their ballots in order to ensure their votes are counted. Under Arizona law, voters are supposed to receive notice of any signature problems with their ballots and an opportunity to fix them. But the long ballots and administrative processing issues this year have left more than 350,000 voters with little to no time to fix signatures before the Sunday deadline, because administrators are still processing mail ballots. All voters should have five days from the time they are notified to cure their ballots and fix their signatures. Counting every vote is foundational to protecting the fundamental right of every eligible citizen to participate in the electoral process. No voter’s ballot should be discarded because of an error on their ballot that they were never given an opportunity to fix. Every individual’s voice matters and deserves to be heard.

“We recognize the importance of counting every ballot in a timely and efficient manner. However, a short extension for fixing ballots is crucial to protecting the right to vote of every Arizonan and can be achieved without serious disruption to election administration. Extending the cure period benefits all voters and ensures that their votes count, especially in close races, where a handful of votes can determine who is elected.”
