Las Vegas, NV — Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit against Nye County, Nevada to prevent the county from moving forward with its proposed unlawful hand-counting scheme during this year’s elections. Kerry Durmick, Nevada State Director at All Voting is Local Action, released the following statement in support of the lawsuit:

“We support ACLU Nevada and their lawsuit against Nye County over its use of hand-counting mail-in ballots, which would violate both state and federal laws. Hand-counting is less accurate than electronic tabulation, and providing only paper ballots is not ADA accessible. We are glad that ACLU Nevada has taken this step in filing a lawsuit representing Nye County voters who are at risk of their vote being suppressed by the county’s proposed procedures ahead of the midterm elections. Although Nye County and Mark Kampf have taken the lead on introducing hand counting ballots into our election system, this could have a negative ripple effect within other counties, as well as across the country.

“Here at All Voting is Local Action, fighting for fair registration rules and more accessible voting options means calling out the efforts that will hinder our citizen’s ability to vote and cast their ballots safely. We will ensure Nye County voters – and all Americans – have their voices heard.”
