WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives just elected Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana to be Speaker of the House. In response, All Voting is Local Action Executive Director Hannah Fried released the following statement:
“It is highly irresponsible and frankly shameful that our elected representatives selected someone who attempted to dismantle our democracy to lead their legislative chamber. Rep. Johnson made a name for himself as a key player in the effort to overturn the will of the people following the 2020 presidential election. He has repeatedly supported baseless conspiracy theories about our elections and has voted against important federal protections for voter access, including the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act . Any lawmaker with these anti-democratic views shouldn’t be Speaker of the House.
“As we head into 2024 and our next general election, we need our leaders in office to maintain and fight for our sacred right to vote. Rep. Johnson has proven time and time again that he opposes this basic right and seeks to dismantle the very system that elected him. Those of us who value voting and protecting our democracy must brace ourselves for the tough fight ahead.”
