JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On Thursday, student leaders from Edward Waters University (EWU) and the University of North Florida (UNF) will hand deliver hundreds of petitions to the office of Duval County Supervisor of Elections, Mike Hogan, to demand that he restore early voting sites to their campuses and meet with them to discuss how his office plans to provide access for upcoming elections.
Local advocacy groups will team up with students to rally together for their voting rights. Participating groups include EWU’s A. Philip Randolph Institute, All Voting is Local, Campus Vote Project, the ACLU of Florida, the NAACP of Jacksonville, Northside Coalition of Jacksonville, Sisters Seat at the Table, the UNF Chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, and Black Voters Matter. The students and advocacy groups will also ask Hogan to meet to discuss future pathways towards restoring on-campus voting.
Despite offering early voting on campus in 2018 at EWU — a historically Black university — and the UNF, Hogan has resisted community calls to restore these essential voting locations for the 2020 and 2022 elections.
